Joel means, ‘The LORD is his God’. The prophet Joel speaks about the Day of the Lord, when evil empires will be brought to a place of judgement and God’s people will finally be delivered from corrupt human systems. However, Joel saw in his present disastrous circumstances a warning about this future and a promise that would bring hope. Joel is clear that God will deal with his people and not allow evil to continue wreaking havoc on them or his world. So Joel encourages them to respond in lament, repentance, and worship, confident that God will restore both them and the world, with his abundant provision and power.
